Bonefish Grill’s Bang Bang Shrimp is one of the restaurant’s most popular menu items. The dish features fried shrimp with a sweet chili sauce and hot sauce for an added kick. It’s super simple to make at home and only requires a handful of ingredients.

What is Bang Bang sauce made of?

While Bonefish Grill isn’t going to disclose to us exactly how they make their Bang Bang sauce, we’ve done our best to whip up a copycat version that is extremely similar in taste. Bang Bang sauce is made out of mayo, Thai sweet chili sauce, and hot chili sauce. If you just want to use the recipe for Bang Bang sauce, omit the other ingredients listed below.

With our recipe below, simply add a step for cooking up your favorite pasta noodle (we recommend angel hair for this recipe), and toss the bang bang shrimp in with the pasta for a hearty, delicious dinner.

Bang Bang Shrimp Ingredients

  • 1 pound deveined, shelled shrimp
  • 1/2 cup mayo
  • 1/4 cup Thai sweet chili sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon sriracha
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey (optional)
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch
  • Oil for frying (canola or vegetable)
  • Head of lettuce
  • Green onions

Directions

  1. In a bowl, combine mayo, Thai sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and honey.
  2. Transfer sauce to a saucepan on low to medium heat and let simmer while you prepare the shrimp.
  3. Add cornstarch to a shallow bowl or plate (something you can coat the shrimp in).
  4. One piece at a time, coat shrimp with cornstarch on all sides.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet on medium to high heat.
  6. Add all shrimp to skillet, laying flat on the pan.
  7. Flip shrimp over after a few minutes or one side is golden brown.
  8. Once golden brown all over, remove the shrimp onto a plate covered in a few layers of paper towel. This will allow excess grease to drip out.
  9. Combine shrimp and sauce, stir well to coat.
  10. Wash and pull apart lettuce leaves and set on a plate for serving.
  11. Dice green onion for garnish.
  12. Add shrimp on top of lettuce and top with green onion. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can swap out sriracha for another hot chili sauce, but I generally find that the taste and texture of sriracha work best for this recipe.
  • This recipe is super easy to double if you’re feeding a crowd or want leftovers. You might also find that you want to make more sauce than the recipe calls for, especially if you’re tossing the shrimp with pasta (the pasta will absorb some of the sauce and almost dilute the flavor).
  • To make a healthier version of the shrimp and minimize saturated fat, you can opt to skip the breading and oil for frying. Instead, combine cooked shrimp and Bang Bang sauce in a saucepan and sauté for seven to 10 minutes.
  • If you want your shrimp to be spicier, add more hot sauce! The beauty of the copycat recipe is that you can customize everything yourself.
